The Gift of Prophecy

An Overview of the Gift of Prophecy
In the Scriptures, prophecy is where you deliver a message from God. It can be a warning, a message, or an encouragement from God! As a refresher, let’s define some of the other gifts of the spirit:
A word of knowledge is a specific word about the past or the present
A word of wisdom typically provides wisdom for a present situation that will affect the future.
A word of prophecy typically flows up from a word of wisdom or a word of knowledge! These gifts often function together. The gift of prophecy shares the heart of God towards whoever you’re speaking to.
Bible Verses About The Gift of Prophecy
“But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort”
This Bible verse about the gift of prophecy comes from 1 Corinthians 14. In this chapter of the Bible, the Apostle Paul talks about worship, the gift of tongues, and the gift of prophecy.
“Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
Bible verses about the gift of prophecy remind us that the Holy Spirit is the source of prophecy. True prophecy goes beyond someone saying “Thus sayeth the Lord!’ or “This is the word of the Lord!” Real prophetic words and the anointing of the spirit of prophecy come by the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit alone.
“This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.”
As someone who loves the Holy Spirit, I love Bible verses about the gift of prophecy from Acts 2! God came and baptized the disciples in Holy Spirit and fire after Jesus rose from the dead. The Holy Spirit also empowers us to prophesy, speak in tongues, have dreams, and see visions from God. Hallelujah!
Stories About the Gift of Prophecy
Once while doing outreach with some friends of mine, we felt the Lord ask us to go to Hobby Lobby. While we were there, a woman was highlighted to us. When we asked her what she needed prayer for, she began to tell us about a series of freak accidents she had experienced.
From multiple near death experiences, to industrial shelving falling on her at work, to being hit by a car, to being electrocuted in a very short window of time — this woman had experienced so much hell in her life.
As we went to start praying, I let her know that God is the healer, but He is also the savior! The team and I decided to wait on the Lord. As we did so, we started to discern spirits that were oppressing her and operate in the gift of prophecy!
As Joshua began to pray for her, this woman started to experience healing! One symptom after another, the Lord began to heal her. I kept praying in the spirit and discerned that she had a spirit of death, an assignment from the enemy to kill her.
I prophesied what I was discerning to her and she said, “Yes. I was wondering if maybe something might have been going on!” We canceled the assignment over her and then continued to minister to her. As we did so, multiple prophecies came forth in Hobby Lobby!
This woman’s life was radically transformed in that moment! From healings, to addressing the root of the issue, to discerning spirits, to salvation, and the glory of the gift of prophecy, God was on the move in the store!
God is good and the gifts of the spirit are given to us to HELP those around us!
